Wonky wires

Apologies for the lack of posts in the last few days. My internet connection failed me for an extended period. After much cursing, rebooting of routers, fiddling with settings and calls to my internet provider, I finally fixed it. Combining my degree in electrical engineering and many years of experience as a software engineer, I skillfully unscrewed the wallplate and randomly wiggled the sockets wires around until some lights came on. You can’t learn stuff like that in college.

In other internet news, of the slightly more significant kind, it looks like Yahoo is up for sale. Normally I wouldn’t care about this, but Yahoo own tumblr, a prime source for finding great material to post here. To Yahoo’s credit they seem to have left tumblr to do its thing, despite the worries expressed when the original deal went through. There’s no guarantee a new owner would continue that. Even more worryingly, one of the names in the frame is the Daily Mail. For those that don’t know it, this is a horrible right wing UK tabloid that hypocritically loves to rail against sex, kink and alternative culture while simultaneously featuring it to attract eyeballs. I can’t imagine a worse site to control something like tumblr.

Here are a couple of images that illustrate the kind of excellent material that can currently pop up there. I stumbled on these at ‘A Gentle Mistress‘ via this post. I believe this is the photographers site and the extended sequence of images can be seen here.

  1. Welcome back on line 🙂

Years before I went to college – TH Hamburg, BRD – my father taught me to go after the softest options first, in case of an electric appliance letting me down: 1 Plugs. 2 Cables and power leads. 3 Jacks and wall sockets. 4 Fuses. 5 Hidden depleted back-up batteries. 6 Open the box … and when in doubt Margarätchen, leave it to an expert. Glad you were able to fix that dodgy connection.

I think it was in the Telegraph I read about the Daily Mail planning to buy Yahoo. But I didn’t know Tumblr is owned by Yahoo … Let’s hope for the best, because the ancient Chinese malediction “May you live in interesting times” is becoming truer and truer, day by day.

Found this, during my lunch break: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/04/13/british-politician-admits-relationship-with-s-m-sex-worker.html
I suspect this is one of the gentlemen who pressed for and passed the new media guide lines for on-line pornography in the UK last year … Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi … in the most time honoured Tory tradition: Keeping the vices of the rich and powerful unavailable to the poor and powerless. And after braking the 11th commandment and your cover is blown: Lie and deny and keep repeating the lies and denials.

  2. I wonder if the Daily Mail has realised exactly what can be found on Tumblr. I have no doubt that if they do buy Yahoo they will close down Tumblr. However horrified you are about this possibility it does show how wrong all those predictions about the death of print media that were circulating only a few years ago were. It fits nicely with the news that sales of actual books have rallied and the sale of e books have dropped. It appears that there is still a place for newspapers and books that you can actually hold. It’s probably to late though for pornographic magazines.
