Life Lessons

I always appreciate a day that I end wiser than when I began it. Today for example, I learned that one should never schedule an appointment at a dermatology clinic the day after a BDSM scene. Particularly a scene you began by confidently declaring – “Oh, marks? No problem. Do whatever you want.”

It wasn’t as if I’d forgotten about the following days appointment. There were some minor red patches on my ankle I’d be meaning to get checked out for weeks. I just figured since it was only my ankle, a doffed sock and a rolled trouser leg would do. I figured wrong. A fact that was made obvious the moment the orderly threw me one of those skimpy backless hospital gowns to put on. Apparently my first visit required a proper inspection, no matter what my protestations to the contrary.

In the event I got not one but two doctors carefully scrutinizing me from head to toe. Two attractive, efficient and forceful female doctors in white coats. I did think that when the second one turned up that you really couldn’t have scripted it better. As the basis for a farce, sitcom, drama or adult movie, whatever you preferred, it worked for all.

Amazingly, despite their careful inspection, they didn’t query my bruises at all. I was fully prepared to plead the medical fifth on the cane marks down my back and the obvious clamp marks on my nipples (from these), but the issue never arose. That makes me suspect they’re either very bad doctors who missed the marks entirely, or very good doctors who knew exactly what the marks were. Given that they identified and queried a tiny insect bite on my wrist and a small mole on my shoulder blade, both of which were pretty hard to spot, I’m going to assume the latter. I’ll now endeavor to resist my urge to test the theory by getting even more obviously marked for any return visits.

  1. WHAT…!

Who’s your doctor? I want a referral! The two times I went to the doctor (NOT my ex), I was grilled over my marks! It was like the inquisition in there!

I honestly wonder why I was questioned while you got a pass…?

Hmm…the only thing that I can come up with is, being a woman, my doctors may have been concerned with the possibility of domestic violence or self-mutilation. He did ask me, “Did you do that to yourself?” Well…in a manner of speaking….

    Thanks for blogging.

    1. I’d guess gender would play a role here. Which is kind of busted, as men can suffer from domestic abuse as well, but it’s still primarily seen as an issue for women.

It might also have been the stage the marks were at. Mine were very fresh (about 12 hours old), and therefore quite distinctive. There were some scratches on my back, some very straight cane lines and some distinctive square patches by the nipples (with the serration pattern from the clamp jaws still visible). But no bruising. Not sure what stage your marks were at, but I suspect if I’d gone in there with some very distinctive purple and yellow bruises there might have been more questions. As you know, as marks evolve the source gets harder to identify.

  2. Hi Paltego:

Let’s hear it for thorough examinations by attractive female doctors! I’m all for it! In fact my primary care physician fits that description. For my last visit she was wearing a white lab coat and black leather boots. That might have inadvertently increased my blood pressure reading.

I am guessing they knew what the marks were and didn’t feel they had to inquire or perhaps thought they might embarrass you by doing so. Many years ago I admitted to a female physician that I had been to see a dominatrix. After my (extremely thorough) examination was finished she told me I was a “very obedient” patient! 🙂

    1. Hey hmp,

I was actually debating what I should say if I got asked. If it was just 1:1 then I’d have probably gone for a close variation on the truth. But with two attractive doctors prodding me, I was tending to the plead the fifth route!

It’s funny but I’ve interacted with 4 doctors in the last year or so – 1 back specialist, 1 primary care and these 2 dermatologists. And all of them were attractive and forceful women around my age or a bit younger. That’s completely random, but I’m not going to complain! Even my ophthalmologist fits that pattern, so either there’s some weird subconscious thing going on here, or somebody somewhere likes me 🙂
