Vintage Venus

I’ll finish my trio of vintage themed posts with an obvious tribute to the famous Venus in Furs. This is from the 1930’s, but I’m afraid I don’t have any other background information on it. Despite the relatively poor reproduction quality, I do think it’s quite a beautiful image.

  1. I love it! I’m crazy for fur. I think it’s sexy as hell, and, like leather, there is something primitive, sadistic, and even mystical about it. It’s transformative–like you take the power of the animal you wear. And oh wow, does it feet great when you touch it!

Unfortunately, I almost never wear it because I am a guilty polite liberal and the fur industry is gross. I do have a black fox jacket I inherited. People criticize me for wearing it, but as far as I’m concerned, the foxes died before I was born, and what am I going to do, throw it out? It’s better in a landfill than keeping me warm?

They make wonderful fake furs these days and when I am rich I am going to buy several.

    Thanks for blogging!

    1. I do enjoy the feel and look of fur. As you say it’s a very sexy and primitive thing. Can’t say that I fetishize it, but it does create a strong impression.

Possibly I’m naive, but I’ve never understood why nobody created ethical fur. Assuming of course that you accept eating animals is OK and that wearing them is OK, as a lot of people do. The fur industry is gross, but what if the animals were humanely raised and treated? Could that ever work? Is it simply that fur animals are cute, where leather ones aren’t?

Thanks for stopping by! Hope you’re feeling better and doing OK with the transition from the studio.
