Marking her property

A few days ago Suzanne, over at All Mine, put up a post about femdom symbols and marks of ownership. She mentioned tattoos and that put me in mind of the image below. This was posted on Lexi Sindel’s tumblr with the caption ‘Devotional tattoo on my slave’.

A tattoo is undoubtedly a major commitment. A tattooed collar, dominant’s initials or basic geometric mark of ownership is a serious step. On average relationships do not have the same longevity as tattoos. Going for the full-on portrait, featuring a Mistress in head to toe fetish gear swinging a whip, well that’s a pretty ballsy move. It’s not my personal style, but I do hope it works out for its owner. If nothing else it’s probably a great conversation starter.

  1. Hi paltego,

In my comment to Ms. Suzanne, I forgot to mention Em’s choice for my pubic tattoo that reads “House bitch.”

A tattoo is a commitment. For most, that’s a dimension of what tats are all about. The British artist who did all my major work, Alex Binnie, once told me that he resists doing tattoos that declare specific relationships. Experience taught him that the tattoo became a harbinger of that relationships decline.

Em and I waited twenty years before we felt safe taking that risk.

    1. Hey scott,

20 years is definitely a decent lead in period to that kind of commitment. You two seem to have a pretty special relationship, and one worthy of marking in that way.

Personally if I was ever going to do it, I think I’d want something that was representative of that moment in my life. i.e. Not something that asserted the future, but something that simply recorded the importance of the present. However, who knows how I’d feel in a future situation with a specific relationship.

  2. paltego,

Thanks for the shout out. It’s not the first time I’ve written about the power of symbols. They’re used effectively in many walks of life but I think they’re especially powerful and effective in D/s relationships.

I’d also want to take my time (maybe not twenty years) before choosing a tattoo for my submissive. It’s like putting in a granite counter top and cabinets in a large kitchen remodeling project. Because of their expense, they’ve got some level of permanency…..You better like it. Tattoos aren’t expensive, but they’re permanent.

    1. Hey Suzanne,

No problem on the shout out. Glad to have other people read your wise words 🙂

Granite counter tops do at least have the advantage that you can show them off to neighbors, friends and family without raising too many eyebrows! Although in your case I guess at least some of the family members wouldn’t be too surprised…
