Ruthless people

I was amused to read this article in GQ on a company that offers a kidnapping service. For a thousand dollars or so they’ll kidnap you, hold you hostage and do a bit of sadistic roleplaying. You even get your choice of kidnappers – either standard male goons or a team of ‘Elite Girls’ in microskirts and stripper heels.

What made me smile was how the writer seemed unaware of the very strong BDSM components. It makes absolutely no mention of that angle, whilst describing things like scene negotiation, safewords, bondage, etc. Pro-dommes have been fulfilling these kind of fantasies for years. Lydia even has an isolation cell she can store her victims in prior to an interrogation. Pretty much any major city will have a pro-domme who’ll be able to offer a kidnap and torture session, so I’m not sure why the writer felt he had to fly to Detroit to experience it.

Of course if you want a really exciting scene, you need a heartless family member on the phone refusing to pay the ransom. Hearing your wife opt for a new kitchen over freeing you would add an interesting frisson to the experience. I always enjoyed Danny Devito playing the heartless husband in Ruthless People.

  1. paltego,

Clearly the strangest thing about this article is the striking absence of any mention of the BDSM or kink angle. Maybe it was at the insistence of the kidnappers? Maybe they get off on it more than their clients? Who knows. It doesn’t seem plausible that someone would write such an article and avoid the BDSM angle.

    1. Hi Suzanne,

I wonder if the kidnappers are worried about getting conflated with BDSM and therefore losing thrill-seeking ‘vanilla’ clients. They seem to be selling it as a kind of extreme theater experience. I suspect there are a lot of people who might be sold on the idea of the adrenaline rush and the tension of the dynamic, but would shy away from a BDSM experience. I can imagine guys relating the experience as a macho thing as it’s described in the article, but add an implied sexual component (even if the experience is identical) and suddenly having a bunch of burly guys tie you up would not be something to brag about.

  2. I saw that GQ article…(it also reminded me a little bit of that Michael Douglas film, “The Game.” Loved that film!).

Abduction is a very hot fantasy! I’d love to do an extended abduction session! Heck, I’d love to do an extended abduction session as the person being kidnapped and interrogated!

I really wish that there was a way I could hire straight (or bi) male tops to get my needs met sometimes. I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Anyway…that Danny Devito clip cracked me up…I’ve never seen the film, but I’m going to get it on Netflix tonight! “You got no nuts! What do I have to do? Put a gun in your hand?” lol lol

very funny. Thanks for movie recommendation.

Love your blog; hope you are well!

    1. Personally I wasn’t a huge fan of ‘The Game’, mostly because it seemed to be a Hollywood rip off of The Magus by John Fowles. That book has issues of its own but I just couldn’t watch the movie without thinking of it.

Ruthless People on the other hand is a lot of fun, albeit in a very lightweight throw-away comedy form. Everyone in it is perfectly cast, but Devito is the standout.

      Thanks for stopping by,

    1. Heh. I was just commenting on your earlier reply as you wrote this. Glad you liked it. The “I’ve been kidnapped by K-Mart” line and the scene with money handover (“This could be the stupidest person on the face of the earth. Perhaps we should shoot him?”) always make me smile.
